How is Roof Pitch Calculated?

Roof pitch describes the steepness of a roof, expressed as the ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run. In the US, pitch is given as X:12 (inches of rise per 12 inches of run). In metric systems, it can be expressed as degrees or percentage.

Pitch affects water drainage, snow load capacity, material selection, and usable attic space. Flat roofs (<2:12) require membrane waterproofing, low-slope (2:12-4:12) can use standing-seam metal or modified bitumen, and conventional slopes (4:12-9:12) allow shingles, tiles, or metal panels.

The slope factor (secant of roof angle = 1/cos θ) converts footprint area to actual roof surface area. For example, a 6:12 pitch has a slope factor of 1.118, meaning the roof area is 11.8% larger than the building footprint.

Example Calculation

A roof with 2m rise, 4m run, 10m × 8m footprint. Pitch = 2/4 = 0.5 = 6:12. Slope = arctan(0.5) = 26.6°. Rafter length = √(4+16) = 4.47m. Slope factor = √(1+0.25) = 1.118. Roof area = 10 × 8 × 1.118 = 89.4 m² (per side, ×2 for gable = 178.9 m²).
