How is Brick Quantity Calculated?

Brick quantity estimation divides the wall area by the face area of a single brick plus its mortar joint. The number of bricks per square meter depends on brick size, mortar thickness, and bond pattern (stretcher, header, Flemish, etc.).

Standard mortar joint thickness is 10mm. Common brick sizes vary globally: modular (194×57mm face), standard (203×57mm), queen (203×70mm), and king (244×70mm). A standard modular brick with 10mm joints yields approximately 73 bricks per m² in stretcher bond.

Waste factors of 3-10% are added depending on cutting requirements, breakage during handling, and bond pattern complexity. Headers and corners require more cutting, increasing waste.

Formula: Face Area = (Brick Length + Mortar) × (Brick Height + Mortar) Bricks/m² = 1,000,000 / Face Area (mm²) Total Bricks = Wall Area × Bricks/m² × (1 + Waste Factor)

Example Calculation

Wall area = 20 m², modular brick (194×57mm), 10mm mortar, 5% waste. Face area = (194+10) × (57+10) = 13,668 mm². Bricks/m² = 1,000,000/13,668 = 73.2. Total = 20 × 73.2 × 1.05 = 1,537 bricks.
